Ken, I am separating this from my previous posting as it contains some important information about Ransom (b 1779) who had property in Chenango Co, NY.
In May 2004, I visited courthouses in Wampsville, Madison Co, NY and Norwich, Chenango Co, NY to examine records previously reported by Haacker (which you mentioned in your note) and to look for further information.
In summary, I found the following: Ransom bought property in Chenago Co, NY from Thomas Keith in 1800 and from Robert James in 1802 (both noted by Haacker). I could not find a record of the sale of these properties.
However, in 1806, Madison Co was created and included Brookfield where Ransom's properties were located. During this time records were inaccurately recorded (or even omitted) according to courthouse employees.
On 18 May 1807, Thomas Keith sold property to Benjamin Wait. This property was described as "the land formerly sold by Thomas Keith to Ransom Odell".
This suggests that Ransom sold his properties during the time in 1806 when records were not properly kept. It also suggests that Ransom may have left Chenango Co, NY in 1806.
I have not been able to find Ransom in the 1810 census records. Perhaps he was living with his parents? Augustine, who perhaps was his father died in 1808. Austine's wife, Molly, may have been living. Or perhaps his family lived with his in-laws. My gg grandfather, Chauncey, was born in NY in 1812 so it is most likely that the family was in NY in 1810.
