This is my father, who I believe was born in Ireland. He had two sisters, one of whom was called Hope. He was educated at Clifton College, Bristol, England, and flew as an observer pilot from 1917 in the Great War with the Royal Naval Air Service. In 1919 or thereabouts he went to live in Calcutta, India, where some ten years later he became Asst. Sec. of the Calcutta Turf Club. He married my mother there around 1932, and returned with her to England shortly afterwards. In India he was known as Pat O'Dwyer, and, mysteriously, he took on the name Michael when living in England.
I am trying to trace his birth, but I do not know exactly where that took place. What is the best way of tracing a birth in Ireland when, like me, you do not live in Eire? I live in The Netherlands, and there does not appear to be an online search service for Irish births. Would I be required to go in person to the General Registry Office in Ireland?
