Hello Alan,
I do not have a Robert Offord in my tree but I do have a Maria Offord born in Bury St Edmonds in c 1818 whose father William Offord was a maltser also. From Maria's wedding certificate in 1843 I know that William was already dead. Maria died, I believe, in 1866. Her married name was Curtis.
Incidentally, she lived in 8 Wood St in Upper Clapton London at one stage and in the 1871 census a Robert Offord (a coachman or carman as I recall)also born in Bury St Edmonds c1821 and his wife Frances were living at 5 Wood St.They did not have any children with them.
I have also come across at some stage in the censuses a Robert or Robert Joseph from Sudbury who was a maltser also.
It is entirely possible that the Offords were in the brewing trade and some of them came to London to try their luck. I strongly suspect that the two living in Wood St were likely to be siblings at best or cousins at worst.
Have you ever found any baptismal records?
Look forward to hearing from you.
