Larry -- I have an original copy of the Evans & Stivers "History of Adams County 1900" and looked up Newman. I only found a John Newman 1863-died sometime after the book was written. It's on page 826. There may be other Newmans in the book, but no other profile that might be related to your folks. The section on Jefferson Township is interesting if you've never read it. You can get to an online version of Evans & Stivers -- http://www.heritagepursuit.com/ . Jefferson Township starts on page 428. There is a table of contents on the heritage pursuit site. I did a quick look in my replica "Caldwell's Illustrated Historical Atlas of Adams Co. 1880" and found A. B. Newman and B. Newman on the Jefferson Twp map (p. 159), Robert Newman (p.58) as a charter member of Lodge 653 I.O.O.F. on 3 Aug 1876, and L. H. Newman and John M. Newman in the Jefferson Twp Business Directory (p. 66). L. H. had 180 acres in Blue Creek, farmer, born in Ohio, and settled in 1841. John M. had 8 acres in Blue Creek, and was a merchant. There was no James B Newman in the index. None of the Newmans you listed in the email showed up in the "Adams County Ohio History 1989" where subscribing families sometimes documented their ancestors. All of these were self-reported, but it can be useful. There were Dixons and Newmans, but I suspect most of them are from another family as none of the names matched. James parents (John R. and Phebe Brooks) do appear in the "Adams County Marriages II", p. 169 -- date: 15 Dec 1845 source: Scott journal. James B. and Ellen Dixon are not listed in the book, but that omission only indicates that none of the secondary sources entered so far have included their names. Also, if Ellen was from Kentucky, I suspect they married in KY. The Scott journal was from Henry Scott, J.P. who kept a JP record of marriages he performed, as well as a personal journal containing marriages of family members and neighbors. BTW -- the Adams Gen Society has replica Evans & Stivers and the Marriages books. I had to order the Caldwell's online. I'll ask Lisa (the Presbyterian minister) if the church does have any records. I've never thought to ask her as most of my ancestors were in Liberty, Sprigg, and Tiffin Townships, and most were Methodist. sooo -- We're left with my trip in late September. I may have met your Amish clients as we frequently go out to Wheat Ridge, and my Dad (Bob Satterfield) frequently worked with them on surveys. Here's hoping I find something in the old cemetery.
