Pitchin, located in Green township, was originally known as Concord. Everett's Atlas, 1875, states that a David Bennett started a grocery and after opening a keg of beer, told all to "pitch in".
There's another similiar story of how a man who ran a sawmill and when others applied for work, he would tell them to "pitch in".
The Garlough's were one of the earliest to settle in that area and lived near Pitchin.
"John Judy Sr, was born in Basle, Switzerland, about 1760. He came to America at the age of ten, with his father's family, who settled on the south branch of the Potomac. He came to Kentucky at the age of 22 and married Phoebe Lamaster. About 1794 he came to what is now Greene Co, Ohio and about the year 1800, he came into the territory of what is now Harmony township and settle two miles east of the present site of Plattsburg." source: 20th Century History of Springfield, and Clark County, Ohio and Representative Citizens: by Hon. William M Rockel, 1908.
Same source, pg 578 & 579, has a lenghty article that states that Nathaniel Hatfield was 1 of the pioneer farmers of what is now Clark County, coming with his family as early as the year 1808, locating in Springfield township, about 1 1/2 miles northeast of Pitchin, wife was Nancy Judy. He died of milk sickness in the prime of his life. The article continues about his son James, born in 1803, married Margaret Kitchen and his son Hon. James Hatfield who represented Clark County in the Ohio State Legislature, veteran of the Civil War, 12 April 1866 to Harriett J Stewart, dau of Perry and Rhoda (Wheeler) Stewart.
