"20th Century History of Springfield and Clark County, OH" by Rockel, published in 1908 has the following on pages 232 & 233:
William Ross, though not a native, emigrated from Mason Co, Kentucky in 1797 to Ohio, stopping first in Warren Co. for about 1 year, before moving to the vicinity of Tremont City, in German twp, Clark Co, settling just north of Tremont. (The previous paragraph mentioned that many in the area originated from Virginia.)
At age 30, he married Winneford Rector, a sister to Charles Rector and they had 8 children, 7 of which were born in KY. They were:
William, Elijah, Nancy, Elizabeth, John, Presley, Mary and Charles who was born in Ohio after their arrival.
William built the first frame house in that area, two stories high with a shingle roof and tin spouting which was put up by his son in law Daniel Harr of Urbana (Champaign Co, OH).
Son Elijah farmed with his father until 1825 when he moved out of the township. Charles took his place and later, Presley bought out Charles' interest and died there in 1852.
It goes on to tell an interesting story, saying that the father, William Ross, at age 5 was kidnapped by 2 Indians and was about to be burned, when a French trader came along and interceded in the boy's behalf, giving the Indians each a blanket and saving his life. Ross was taken to Detroit where he was made a page to the trader's daughters. In those days, it was fashionable for the French ladies to wear very long trails which were carried by pages. William was given up as dead by his parents. During the French and Indian War, his brother John was with the soldiers in Detroit, saw and recognized him and took him home.
It goes on the say that Mr Ross was a great Methodist and services were held in his home for many years. His son John was in the War of 1812 and the first to marry in that township to Rachel Wallace in 1806. He lived to be four score and four years.
