Lena, 1870 Census and it appears to be in Leesburg, all noted as "black": BASS John, 59, NC, works at brick masonry Huldah, 55, NC, keeping house Almira, 22, NC, seamstress Ann, 19, OH, seamstress Charles, 17, OH, apprentice brick mason Mary, 13, OH, at school Luther, 9, OH, at home Alice, 7, OH, at home Hester, 5, OH, at home PAGE, Henry, 22, OH, day laborer The only other BASS in Highland that year is Allie BASS,(also black) 22, OH, domestic servant, for the Pugsley family in Brush Creek Twp. This would some distance from Leesburg (perhaps Carmel area) but may be related. Yes, even the college is open during summer months during weekdays. Check the websites for hours.
