Lena,
I re-checked Highland Co. marriage records to 1900, cemetery records before 1900, probate records to 1880 plus birth and death records (did not begin in Ohio until 1867) and a couple of history books for the area. The only Basses found were James in 1860 and John in 1870 and the lone female Bass buried in Greenfield. Also checked Highland census records to 1900 without success.
I don't want to discourage you from visiting Ohio but there may nothing to find, at least in Highland. I really couldn't tell you where to look that you haven't tried already.
I've got a few of those brick walls, too. There may be nothing to tell me what I need to know but I keep looking anyway.

good luck,
Steve
