Shirley,

Thanks for your response. I do now have the probate papers for the name change, that document he was a Speaker instead of a Streeter as written in several publications. I know from the death certificate that the father's name was Speaker and the mother's name was Evans. We are hypothesizing that his name was Adelbert Speaker and his mother's name was Mary Evans. (Evans is the name of his mother listed in cemetery records.) I cannot confirm the first names as of yet. She may also have worked for the Washburn and Wakefield families as a domestic, remarried after 1860 and could have been paid by Captain Henry Kelley throughout her life to help her through. There may be some evidence of that in his will.

According to an early census record, his Frank Adelbert Kelley's father was Prussian and his mother was from Huron. His obituary says he came from Huron to Milan at 22 months. He had cousins but they are not listed.

I will research court docs when I get to Milan in September.
I am also going to write the churches that may still have baptism records for FAK. Even though he grew up Methodist, he might have been baptized in another faith, say a German Catholic or Lutheran church.

Question: He did not become a Kelley until 1900. How then did he go through life, marry, have children and do legal transactions with the name of Frank A. Kelley before 1900? That stumps me. He used the Kelley name but it wasn't legally his? How did his wife and children become Kelleys?
Maybe you or someone else can answer that...

Thanks for any tips or insights you can offer.
