Seeking info on the family of Henry and Anne LAWRENCE who were living in Lawrence Co, OH during or shortly after the American Civil War. Andrew G. LAWRENCE was my 2nd-grt-grandfather and brother to Henry. Andrew was killed June 8, 1862 at the Battle of Cross Keys and I believe him to be buried in the tree line of the battlefield. Andrew's wife was Sarah (Sally) Augusta BANCROFT b. Jan 16, 1843 in Worcester MA d. Dec 22, 1918 in Fullerton KY. They lived in Ceredo, WV after marriage as best I can tell was she was teaching school there after he died. That could be wrong, tho' as that's where her parents are shown living and a sister, Sophia BANCROFT, is shown on a census as being a teacher there. Sarah applied for a widow's pension and Henry and Anne LAWRENCE were witnesses. Henry states he is the brother of the deceased. Sarah later married war vet Johnsa W. GLOVER Jan 25, 1871. There are some LDS listings which have her middle name, day of birth and location of birth wrong. I suspect her records have been confused with someone else. She is also often confused with her mother, Sarah (Sallie) KING because her daughter, Agnes Gertrude LAWRENCE was sent to live with her grandparents, Madison BANCROFT and Sarah (Sallie) KING for several years after her father's death and appears on a census with them. I have not been able to locate the marriage certificate for Andrew LAWRENCE and Sarah BANCROFT. I have a period copy from the county clerk for her 2nd marriage to GLOVER as it was filed with her 2nd widow's pension request after his subsequent death. I also cannot determine the parents of Henry and Andrew. Henry and Anne do not appear on census records for Lawrence Co OH as far as I can see. There's a family letter (which had a couple other details slightly screwy, but basically correct) that says Andrew was from Indiana and that there is a town there named for his family. That search has also proven fruitless. If anyone can help me shed light on this brick wall, I'd ber most appreciative. Notify Administrator about this message?
