Hi Pat: John and Mary Stroup's burial sites have been a mystery for quite some time and, no doubt, will remain one. In her letter to me (July 1991), Nancy Bird, great-great-granddaughter of David and Mary (nee Ray) Stroup of Paint Twp., Nancy wrote: "The place where John was buried is quite a mystery. I have been to the site of the Maxey school house. It was leveled a few years ago and the brick toted into South Charleston to form a sign board and wall at the Presbyterian Church. I talked to the Pastor who asked for the bricks. I have cousins who had attended the Maxey school and do not remember a cemetery being there. It must have been there when the good ladies from the DAR were copying the dates. The school house was located on John Stroup's land in Paint Township, Madison Co. OH." So, you won't find me traipsing soon through any fields looking those headstones. I am, however, curious: Have you ever come across any early plat maps of Stokes/Paint Twp.?
