According to the IGI, he was born 21 Sept. 1846 (in IL). According to his Civil War record his nativity was Fairfield OH. 1850/60 census also state birthplace OH and birthyear about 1846. His parents were William E. Gere and Mary Schenck? (Schanck according to one family history I found). They were both born in NY according to 1850-80 census declarations. Seeking a definitive record and hoping to illuminate ancestry. I have extensive data on the Gere family to share.
