Marriage record for William E Gere & Mary Schenck? about 1845

According to the IGI, this occured 28 Dec. 1845 in Alton IL., but I believe the marriage location is more likely OH or NY. Both William and Mary were born in NY according to 1850-80 census records. Their first child, Ira S. Gere, was born in Ohio about Sept. 1846 (Fairfield OH according to his Civil War record). Mary's maiden name is Schanck or Schenck according to one family history I found. Seeking a definitive independent record to confirm or disconfirm the marriage and illuminate the ancestry of this couple
