The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, January 16, 1908 JAMES SMITH JOHNSTON was born March 14, 1832, at Piqua, in Shelby County, Ohio, and died at his home in Russell, Friday, Jan. 10, 1908, of apoplexy, aged 75 years, 9 months and 18 days. MR. JOHNSTON came to Iowa about 1858 and lived for a number of years near Oskaloosa, coming to Lucas County in the spring of 1871 and settling on the farm east of Russell into the present home place March 1, 1900. He was united in marriage to MISS ANNA DEWEESE, March 25, 1858, who died Jan. 5, 1865. To this union were born three children: FRANK who died March 26, '07, and MRS. DORA WHITTEN of Alberta Province, Canada, and MATTIE who died when young. He was married again Sept. 11, 1867, to MISS MARGARET R. WRIGHT. To this union were born five children: Infant babe NETTIE, CARRIE, ROSS and HOWARD. NETTIE died March 4, 1880, and CARRIE and ROSS, March 8th of scarlet fever. HOWARD is engaged in the Presbyterian ministry until recently with Dr. Balcolm Shaw in the Second Presbyterian Church, Chicago. Besides a loving companion, son and daughter, he leaves to mourn his loss two brothers, one of whom is present at the funeral from South Dakota and one in Ohio, besides a large number of relatives and a host of friends who have known and honored him for years. He united with the church in early life and had been an elder in the Presbyterian Church for over forty years. He was a regular attendant at the church services but especially faithful to the prayer meeting. He was jovial in disposition, known familiarly to everybody, a kind husband and father, a true friend and neighbor, a faithful follower of the Lord Jesus Christ and a willing office-bearer in the church. We mourn for him and feel deeply our great loss and commend his loved ones to the God of all comfort -- our Savior and his. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the grief stricken family in their sorrow. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the Pastor, S.A. Soxe. Those in attendance at the funeral from a distance: W.W. Wright, Miss Gail Wright, of Wright, Iowa; Stephen Johnston and wife, Luin Brook, South Dakota; Mrs. Black, Houpeston, Ill.; M.W. Crozier and wife, C.E. Crozier, Miss Minnie Crozier, Miss Higgins and Mrs. Boyd, of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Mrs. Harrison, Wright, Iowa. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 21, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm Notify Administrator about this message?
