Body Of Rebecca Smith Recovered
The body of Miss Rebecca Smith, aged 27 years, Portsmouth young woman who was drowned when the towboat Convoy capsized and sank during Wednesdny night's storm in Cincinnati, was recovered Sunday evening.
The body along with those of two members of the towboat crew was found near the spot where the boat was turned over. Word of its recovery was received by the young woman's sister, Mrs. William Suter, of 1724 Seventeenth street, shortly after Mr. Suter and his brother-in-law,
Henderson Smith, had returned from Cincinnati. The body had not yet beem located when they left Cincinnati Sunday evening.
Arramgements were immediately made to have the body brought to Portsmouth Monday noon when it will be taken in charge by Undertaker Daehler.
Mr. Suter, while in Cincinnati, learned,that Capt. Williams, a former commander of the Convoy, and family had called on Miss Smith early in the evening before the storm and were perhaps the last persons to see her alive. She is thought to have been asleep in her room when the storm broke and had no chance to escape. She was employed as chambermaid on the boat.
Miss Smith was a daughter of the late Rev. W. T. Smith, who was overcome by gas and suffocated while cleaning a well on the family home place at Harrisonville a year ago. She is survived by a widowed mother, Mrs. W. T. Smith, of Harrisonville, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Suter, of Seventeenth street; Henderson Smith of Tick Ridge; John Smith, of Harrisonville; Miss Ora Smith and Mrs. Ida Hutchison, of Tide Ridge. Miss Smith had expected to return to Portsmouth this week for an extended visit. Previous to going to Cincinnati six years ago she was employed at the Selby shoe factory.
Henderson (Hence) Smith was shot in Oct 1923 and died. There is a large article I could copy and e-mail to you. Let me know if you want it.
