Question regarding Native American Marriages

I have a question regarding Native American and white marriages. Did the White women take their Native American husband's last name or did they keep their maiden name?

I am looking for information on my g-g-grandmother, Jenny. She is thought to be Native American. I found someone in the 1880 Hardman County TN census, that I believe is her family, but it shows her living with her Grandfather and her mother and they all have the last name of Cupp.

1880 Hardeman County TN Census:

Geo. Cupp...age 75...Head...Widower...Born TN
S. C. Cupp...age 50...Daughter...Single...Born TN
B. Jane Cupp...age 17...Grandaughter...Single...Born TN

My g-g-grandmother's name was Jenny, born May 1863 in TN. Her mother is Catherine C. Cupp, born March 1827 or 1829 in TN. According to the 1900 Madison County TN census. Catherine is living in the household of Leanda D. (Leander D.) and Jennie Teater and is listed as mother-in-law, a widow and had been married 48 yrs.

Catherine is in the same household (F E or L E Teater) as mother-in-law in the 1910 Calhoun County Arkansas Census. I'm wondering if Catherine was never married or if she did not take her married name. I'm trying to find Catherine's husband/Jenny's father or his family. I believe he may have been Native American from the NC or TN area. Any clue about these kind of marriages will help...Thanks, Linda
