Hi Dale! George H Shirk author of "Oklahoma Place Names" states that Martin, Harmon County, Oklahoma 6 miles southeast of Hollis, was a post office from Sep 16, 1892 to Apr 15, 1912, no longer in existence, it was named for LEVI F MARTIN, first postmaster. "Planing the Route" a Harmon County History book states, In 1890, Louis Franklin Martin of Elsberry, Missouri, married Virginia "Jennie" Shell Gardner, a widow with four children, of Mexico, Missouri. They came to Greer County, Texas (Harmon County now) to homestead 160 acres. They rode the train to Quanah, Texas and rode in a wagon across the Red River to their land. In 1896, L F Martin applied and was granted a permit to establish the Martin Post Office at his home. In the early 1900's Martin was a little village, two stores, blacksmith shop, skating rink, Jones Gin and several families. L F built a new square gable roofed eight room house in 1905. After the railroad came to Hollis, the little village gradually dwindled until only the Martin Church of Christ was left. The building still stands, but the congregation has moved on, some to the Dodson Church of Christ, Dodson, Texas.
