Liz,I am Betty Benton , wife of Roy Lyle. I was born at Cornish. My family came to Cornish in 1897. If you are interested, the deed for the Cornish cemetery is on file at Waurika, the land was donated to the Town of Cornish by The Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations on 8 January 1902 for Cemetery purposes only and the burial plots are free. I have 3 great grandfathers buried there plus many other relatives. I have a photo of the Cornish school when it was first built, it was two storied then, many years later the top floor was removed. Mary Wilson of Wilson Monuments of Lone Grove, you will remember her husband was Ruel Wilson a Minister at Ringling. She compiled a picture album of Orr,Ok and she is now compiling a history of Cornish. I told her that in The Greater Southwest Museum at Ardmore they had a copy of The History of Cornish written by Mose Harris, and also one done years later by Miss Alma Cummings. The Jefferson County, Oklahoma Genealogical Society's book a few years ago did not give much mention to Cornish and they left lots of people in the book out of the index. I think since they did a book on the county they should have included every comunity. The late James Morris, son of Rev. T.F. Morris, had many photos as did his sister, Dorothy, wife of Lloyd Jackson, She is in a nursing home now, but their grandfather Morris had some businesses in early Cornish and Rev. Terry had early businesses in Ringling, (my father had a Radio and Television Repair Shop in back of their store during the times we were back in Ringling, we moved back and forth a lot from there to California. James' wife, Ella, daughter of Charlie and Alice Wade, still runs their Hardware Store in Ringling and I am sure she still has lots of the early photos of Cornish and Ringling. I have some photos of my family in early Cornish. Miss Alma Cummings, when she first started teaching school, she started at Cornish, she rennted a room from my husband's mother and father, at Center Point, she told me she rode a horse to and from there every day to the Cornish school, I coluld't understand this because her family lived in Cornish, why did't she reside at home and just walk the few blocks to school instead of riding a horse from Center Point, but I never inquired why.
