"Stewart Ross Ellis Dies Here Friday Stewart Ross Ellis, 86, 915 Hickory, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday in a local nursing home after a long illness. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. James E. Smith, pastor of the First Christian Church. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Ellis was born March 2, 1890 in Lufkin, Texas. He had been a resident of Duncan for the past 54 years, coming here from Burkburnett, Texas. He had been a member of the First Christian Church for 50 years and was a 32nd degree Mason, a Knights Templar, and a charter member of the Duncan Rotary club. He was responsible for the repletion of the deer population in southern Oklahoma and also introduced sand bass to Oklahoma. He was a retired oil operator and brought to Oklahoma the first rig other than steam operated. Survivors include his wife, Laura Avis of the home; three daughters, Mrs. John P. Stewart of Oklahoma City, Mrs. John R. March of Ardmore, and Mrs. Earl L. Russell of Salina, Kansas; a son, Dr. Richard A. Ellis of 1002 Elk; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Winnie Meredith of Wilmington, North Carolina." Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Don Grantham Funeral Home chapel with Dr. James E. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday. Mrs. Ellis was born February 15, 1892, in Pennington, Texas. She had been a resident of Duncan sixty years, and was a member of the First Christian Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Order of Eastern Star, and various music clubs and organizations. Her husband, Stewart Ross Ellis, died May 14, 1976. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John P. Stewart of Oklahoma City, Mrs. John R. March of Ardmore, and Mrs. Earl L. Russell of Salina, Kansas; one son, Dr. Richard A. Ellis of 1002 Elk; 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Bearers will be Joel Wilkenson, Dr. George Howe, Ronald Gibson, Glenn Taylor, George Scott, and Kenneth Randolph."
