The third time is a charm. My great uncle, Reed Reuben Davis [1856-1931] was b. in White Co., IN s/o Joseph W. & Nancy M. Davis. At age 20 Reed along ;with other Davis family members migrated to Butler Co., KS. By 1900 he was managing Davis Lumber Yard in Douglass, KS, owned by his bro.-in-law, John Erickson. In 1882 Reed m. Emolyne M. True. They had 6 children b. between 1886 and 1906: Ralph, Doris, Elsie, Unknown, Marian and John Bunyon Davis. Emolyne d. during the birth of John in 1906. Following Emolyne's death Reed moved his family to Grandfield, Tillman Co., OK where he owned and founded Davis Lumber Co. The 1910 census of Grandfield shows: Reed Davis, Head, 54, b. IN Lumberman Josephine Davis, wife, 53, b. KY Doris, dau., 20, b. KS Elsie, dau., 18, b. KS John, dau., 12, b. KS (obviously John is not a daughter) Reed's son John B. age 4, was then liviing with his Aunt Harriet (Davis) Stocks in Clinton, Custer Co., OK. The error was corrected as shown in the Ancestry.com indicating Joan DAvis, age 12. Johanna was the daughter of Josephine Sanders as the IGI indicates. Reed's son Ralph was also counted in the 1910 census: Ralph Davis (Lee Ralph), 23, b. KS lumber yard laborer. Frances, wife, 21, b. KS Carter, son, 1. Lindley Carter, 19, bro.-in.law Josephine d. 1918 and was buried in Grandfield Cemtery. The record shows: Josie Sanders WIFE OF REED DAVIS SANDERS 1847-1918 B326 (this record apears to be incorrect based on census). Other recorded Sandeers burials include: Clarence Sanders 1879-1918 B301 Susie, wife of Clarence, 1882-1918 B301 Norene Sanders, dau of C&S 1913-1918 B301 Child L: no dates B360 Child L: " " B361 Child L: " " B361 These statistics may indicate Clarence was the s/o Josie Sanders and that his entire family succumbed to the flu epidemic of 1918. By 1920 census og Grandfield counted: Reed R. Davis, 63 Hadassa O. Davis, 46 J. Bunyan Davis, 14 (John was known as Bun Davis) Hadassa was the mother of Ralph's wife Frances Elizabeth (Carter) Davis and Lindley Carter. Hadassa Olive Leathermen, b. 1854, Clinton Co., OH m. Alfred LeRoy Carter. It is most interesting that J. Leatherman was a laborer living with the Joseph W. Davis family in White Co., IN as recorded in the 1870 census. In 1914 Professor John Davis (my grand father) & family of Edmond, OK visited his brother Reed R. Davis & family in Grandfield. Prof. Davis headed the Physics & Chemistry departments at Central State Normal School (now UCO) in Edmond from 1908-1919. During his tenure he also founded & taught courses in photography. UCO archives has hundreds of glass plate negatives produced during these years including several that were taken in 1914 during the family visit with Reed & family. I now have prints of these family photographs which include the Davis Lumber Yard and family groups. It is my hope that I will eventually discover the name of Josie's first husband, Mr. Sanders (thought to be a member of the Cherokee Nation). I also hope to find dates of Reed's m. to Josie and Hadassa and more about his children and the children of Ralph. There is some indication that Ralph Davis d. around 1930. Shortly after 1930 Reed moved to Washington State and d. in Oregon. If any reader has any information concerning these families I will be most appreciative to learn more. Thanks.
