Some well known lines go like this
By Mac and O
You'll always know
True Irishmen they say;
But if they lack
Both O and Mac,
No Irishmen are they.
In Omelia you have the O unlike me!
There is no doubt that Omelia and Melia are the Anglicised version Omaille.
Grainne's name in English would have been Grace O Malley.
You state that you have seen published the name Omhaille. The h after the m denotes female. Grainne would have been written Grainne Ni Mhaille. The "Ni" means daughter of Maille.
From the Anglo-Norman invasion, the English had a policy of bilingualish and as a result most of our names have two forms one Irish and the other English.They even had a statute of parliament passed that every Irishman living among Englishmen (mainly Dublin area) must take an English surname.
The home of Grainne was in Clue Bay in Co. Mayo. There are castles and a keep she built still standing in the area including one in Achill. So you have every right to claim her. AND SHE WAS SOME GIRL!!!
