I want to merge family files.

I have two family files with virtualy identical names. I want to have just one family file containing all the names of the people in them as each file has a few individuals that the other doesn't. What is the proper or reccomended procedure and which options should I chose when backing up the file? Also, Can I then delete those backup files of the two former family files after the merge is complete? Will the new merged family file automatically create a backup file? Will I have to choose a new name for the merged file? I'm using version 11. Thank you for advice and suggestions.
