Solomon Hart Opdyke, son of Samuel & Jane, father of William N, and Charles H
Researching the descendants of Solomon H Opdyke of New York City. According to the Op Dyck Genealogy Solomon's son William N Opdyke had son George W Opdyke, whom I am hoping can be proven to be my ancestor. Would like help finding him and his siblings in the 1860 census. And have no birth/death/marriage records for this group.
If anyone can help, this is the family info:
William N. Opdyke, b. abt 1828, NY, died 1882, Brooklyn, NY (I think he died in 1880 before the census and the book is wrong). Married Harriet daughter of Jeremiah Ells (of CT and NY), before 1850 and had children:
Sidney F (Daughter, born about 1850)
George W (b. abt 1854)
Eliza D
Joseph N
Married 2nd Anna (Whytzal?) and she outlived him and applied for a widows pension as William served in the Civil War 139th NY, Co. G.
William and his brother Charles were living together on Elm Pl in Brooklyn according to an 1879 Directory. William was a locksmith, Charles a painter and later a clerk. By 1880 Anna is living with her brother, as a widow.
I have William in the 1870 census with wife Anna, but no sign of him and his children in the 1860 census. It seems like after the death of his first wife the children left for parts unknown and my George W ended up in Rock Island Co., IL at age 16, living on his own. The sequence or cause of events is pure conjecture on my part. I am looking for documentary evidence.
Anyone connect to these Opykes?
