Charles Oppermann, New York Times 1/2/1865
Hello,
I am no relation to Oppermann's, but I have an old newspaper with this account that I thought would be interesting to any Oppermann's.
New York Times
January 2, 1865
Shooting in a Lager-Bier Aloon.
At about 1 o'clock yesterday morning Casper H. Hines, who is otherwise known as "Hicks, the Pirate" quarreled with Charles Oppermann, keeper of a lager-bier saloon in Tenth-avenue, near Forty-third street, and at length Hicks fired upon the landlord, but missed aim.He then fled to the street, but again fired from the sidewalk and Christian Schlemmer, one of the bystanders, received in his breast a bullet, which entered beyond the reach of a probe.Hicks was taken into custody by Officers Roberts and Cotrell and taken to the Yorkville Police Court, where he was committed by Justice Dodge.Schlemmer's wound was dressed by Dr. Graham, and he was subsequently taken home, where he lay, yesterday, in a critical condition.
