The Oregon Death Index knows: UNDERWOOD, Hiram Edmiston
Death Date: 29 Jul 1907
County: Lane

(This isn't quite your date, but in the period 12-31 July, 1907 there were only nine deaths total recorded in Lane County, and this one is the only male.)

The 1905 state census of Lane County, West Cottage Grove knows:
H.E. UNDERWOOD, age 52, city marshal

The 1900 federal census of Lane co, West Cottage Grove, knows:
Hiram E. UNDERWOOD, age 47, born Jan 1853, farmer

(He has the same wife in 1900 and 1905.)
