On the 1880 census there is a James Murry age 35~born Scotland~parents born Scotland~occupation sheep herder, living with the James D. Gibson family in Eaton, Wasco Co Oregon. Look at the census and you will see the possibility that this may be him.
James R. Merry does have a naturalization record in Wasco Co. in 1878.
There is a Thomas B Merry who passed away in Portland 9/16/1912. You may need to request an obituary lookup to see if they are related and to gain some insight as to where James landed.
Also a Della Merry passed away in Wasco Co in 1916.
