There is a mailing list on Rootsweb for the California death index. There used to be volunteers (I think there still are) who would do death certificate transcrptions. I have used them in the past. If his fathers name was known by the informant, it should be on the cert.
Go to www.rootsweb.com scroll down to mailing lists on the left side of page, go to state of California, then CA-DEATH-INDEX, you will have to subscribe but all of the instructions are there. I found a lot of really helpful and nice people there when I needed help.
