I purchased the subject undated, divided-back RPPC (Real Photo Postcard) (not postally used) of an elderly man holding a youngster in his lap. It is identified in recent handwriting:
George Orrcutt's brother
After studying related Orcutt family photos and the U.S. Census data, I conclude that the elderly man is Herman L. Orcutt, born Aug 1866 in IA, the son of a farmer, George Orcutt, born Aug 1829 in OH; and Mary Jane More, born 19 Apr 1832 in Medina, OH, died after 1883 in IA. I found him listed in the 1870 and 1880 Census data for Summit Township, Marion Co., IA. I found him listed twice in the 1900 Census data, once for Fairview Township, Jasper Co., IA, and again for Boulder (resided at 1433 Pine Street), Boulder Co., CO. I also found him listed in the 1910 Census data for Fairview Township, Monroe town (resided on South Street), Jasper Co., IA. In about 1889, Herman married Etta/Ettie (maiden name unknown), born Oct 1866 in IA. The couple had one child, name unknown, who evidently died during childhood. Herman worked as a farmer/stock raiser.
I speculate that the youngster in the photo is Herman's grand nephew, Clyde Henry Charlton, born 31 Aug 1929 in IA, died 23 May 1985 in Alameda Co., CA, who was the grandson of one of Herman's brothers, namely George Henry Orcutt, born June 1871 in IA, who married Lola M. Shaw, born about 1875 in IA.
