"This auction is for a Beautiful old Bible, which was given to the original owner John Jeremiah Osterhout as a birthday present by his mother and father on Dec 9th, 1886.There is a beautifully hand written letter, which was written by John's father, John Patterson Osterhout, sometime after 1870, detailing his coming to Bellville, Austin County, Texas in 1851 , where he lived until 1870 and then presumably came to Belton, Bell County, Texas. In Bellville, he held the office of Justice of the Peace & Notary Public and County Attorney. He was a candidate for County Judge, which resulted in a tie. He published a newspaper called The Bellville Countryman from 1860 to 1866."
"There are birth, marriage and death dates for several persons of the family. There is also, glued into the back of the Bible, a Dec 20th, 1912 newspaper clipping of the marriage of John's daughter, Arline Osterhout to Charles L. Proctor in Belton, Texas as well as a funeral notice for the death of John's mother, Junia M. (Roberts) Osterhout, who died in 1897".
