According to John L. Kessell's book, Kiva, Cross and Crown, he mentions a fray Cayetano Otero, born c. 1701, Galicia, Spain and professed January 29, 1725 in Puebla, Mexico and later assigned to the missions in New Mexico. According to local historians, he is the progenitor of the Otero family in New Mexico. It is believed that he fathered a child with Quiteria Duran y Chaves known as Pedro (Duran y Chaves) Otero. Does anyone have access to his family information? Perhaps a connection can be made to prove or disprove this allegation. Church records are almost impossible to obtain, especially if such a birth took place. I am fairly satisfied that this is true, however, there was another two Otero's in Mexico City around this time; Pedro Otero Bermudez and Antonio Otero Bermudez, both brothers. Either one could have been in New Mexico at the time to father Pedro Duran y Chaves Otero or perhaps be a brother (relative) to fray Cayetano Otero. This is a mystery I hope to solve someday. I come from this Otero line which originates with Pedro Otero and Juliana Alari for certain. One of their sons was Estanislao Otero who was my 3rd great grandfather. I would appreciate any information you can provide me.
Thanks, Alfonso Otero in New Mexico
