Chattaroy Cemetery

Chattaroy, Washington
T28N R43E Sec 35

Lat: 47°52'54"N, Lon: 117°20'42"W

Contributed by Maggie Rail Dec 29, 1999, last updated July 19, 2001 [mrail@cet.com]. Total records = 564.

Chattaroy cemetery is located alongside Cowgill Road, 1/2 mile south and 1/2 mile east of Chattaroy, Wash., in the NW Quarter of SW Quarter of Section 35, Twp 28 N, Range 43 E.

The present cemetery was establish in 1894. The books show that burials were made as early as 1888. This apparent contradiction comes because there was a previous cemetery and most of the bodies in the former cemetery, which has been abandoned, were moved to the present cemetery.

There are no known records available for the previous cemetery. The organization meeting of the Association was held on July 7, 1894 in Chattaroy. A resolution was passed to purchase two and one half acres in the area described above, from the Northern Pacific Railway Co., for use as the 'Chattaroy Cemetery'.

Transcribed from my readings of available headstones in August 1998 combined with Sexton records of June 1959 found in, Vol. 1 of "Rural Spokane Cemeteries" Pub. 1961. Some records conflicted. I tried to make them as accurate as possible. This perhaps is because there was more than one record book kept, down through the years. Even these differ on occasion. When it was the headstone reading I went with that. I made a note if I could not decide. For information on Eastern Washington Genealogical Society publications, including the one mentioned above, contact the EWGS at PO Box 1826 Spokane WA 99210-1826.

For the sake of space I used abbreviations, transposing all dates to numbers (month, day & year) and in the case of misspelling on the cause of death, I left what was written.

The cemetery is divided into four sections; A, B, C and D. Each section is composed of lots, numbered from 1 upwards. I do not have the location for all, but list those I found record of. Lot is listed first, then section letter. For those available I listed place of death. I was told by the current Sexton there were County Poor farm burials, with no known records of names and where they are in the cemetery. Transcribed and compiled by Maggie Rail © 1999. Burials listed up to 09/02/1998 when I walked the cemetery, then again in July of 2001.

The Rosewood Cemetery is located three and one half miles south of Fairfield WA, and one half mile East of Hwy 27. Sec. 1 T21N R44E. It was established in about 1888 by German Immigrant Farmers. Ferdinand Pagel donated three fourths of the land and Frederick Kienbaum donated one fourth. In later years Henry Treede Jr. donated an addition to the original part.

Most of the early burials were of the Lutheran faith and of German or Danish descent. Even today many of the burials are descendants of the early families. I have transcribed from the current cemetery files as provided to me by Charley Hahner, the Sexton. Transcribed and compiled by Maggie Rail ©1998. Last update, May 2001.

Goldenrod Cemetery
Tekoa, Whitman County, Washington
Contributed by Bud Engelhardt and Marian Kramer May 2000 [george@arias.net]. Total records = 2,042.
The Goldenrod Cemetery is located one mile south of Tekoa, in Whitman County, Washington. It contains twelve acres; eight in the old section and four in the new section. The original tombstone inscriptions were read by Weston and Carrie Lartigue July 19 & 20, 1972. During the winter and spring of 1999-2000 Bud Engelhardt researched the records and updated this list with the help of Marian Kramer of the Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa, WA. Many but certainly not all have grave markers. Bud Engelhardt physically inventoried the grave markers in the cemetery again in the May of 2000. Those without a marker are identified with "n/m" on this report. There is always the possibility of markers being grassed over, not readable, missing, etc. since the last reading.

There are several graves that indicated on the records as filled but identified as "Unknown". According to a note found in the ledgers "an old Chinaman is buried on the left side of the cemetery entrance in Sec.23 Block 17 Grave #2." No additional information was found concerning this.

At the end of this log is an additional list of names found in an very old Goldenrod Ledger. Almost all the names on this second list are NOT ON GRAVE MARKERS in this cemetery. Many are obviously burials, others are associated probably with the purchase of the lots.

Earliest Birth: Harriett McGraham 1818 - 1913 "The Puckett's Grandma"
