My gr.gr. grandfather John Conrad Ott was born on the Rhine in Schaffhaufen Switzerland in about 1820. He ended up in Monroe Wisconsin, also known as the Swiss Colony.

He returned to Schaffhaufen in 1859 to marry his second wife, as the first left him a widower. I have the german bibel dated Nov. 24 1859, which appears to be a wedding gift.

I recall my grandmother said she had an uncle that was a preist in Milwaukee. However, I don't recall his name. Her grandfather made frequent trips between Milwaukee and Monroe by horse back with overnight stays at my grandmothers parents home in Madison.

The part about your ancestor swiming the Rhine, being Swiss and a piest, makes me wonder if there might be a connection there.
