The Fidelis Foster who appears in the 1776 Census of Harford County, Maryland, is the same one who appears in the 1790 Census of York County, Pennsylvania, and who died in Monongalia County, Virginia in 1800. If memory serves, two of his daughters married into the Stewart family, and one a Weaver. Margaret married John Lewis Ott, or more properly, Johann Ludwig Ott, the son of Johann Melchior and Eva Catharina Orth (Ort/Ortt/Ott); John Foster lived in Monongalia County, where he died in the 1830s; Fidelis Foster (Jr.) appears to have died before 1800. The name Fidelis (this is the correct spelling) descended through both the Stewart and Ott families; in fact, every appearance I have found in Wirt County and the surrounding area seems to be a descendant of Lewis Ott's.
The mention of the name "Ortt" in the Stewart book is evidently based on the will of Fidelis Foster, which names all of his children, but did not identify Margaret's husband. "Ortt" is one of several variations of the name Ott or Orth, which appears frequently in York and Monongalia County records. All of the Wood and Wirt County records give the name as "Ott," but the majority of York and Monongalia County records give "Orth," "Ort," or "Ortt." All three of these would have been pronounced the same in German, so my guess is that "Orth" is the likeliest form. However, all four of the children who settled in Virginia (Catharine Wiseman, Lewis Ott, Penny Pixler, and Casper Ott) used the form "Ott." Casper, a.k.a. Gaspar, Jasper, etc., is the only one regularly called "Ort" or "Orth" in county records, as well as "Ott," although Lewis sometimes is so called in Monongalia County records. Penny was the last one still living, and the 1850 census gives her name as "Ott."
