The Otts came to the US from Germany, and as far as I know the only reason the name change is because of the way it was pronounced when they were taking the census. In the early years they were all hand written and they generally wrote what they heard. Therefore we have Ott changed to Utt or Utz Even as a passenger on a ship they still had the problem of spelling, being that they were German and could not speak the language often they wrote only what they heard .
