Josiah Gilbert was born about 1756 in the New York area, likely Salem in Westchester County and died in South Norwich Township, Oxford County, Upper Canada between July 15, 1831 and October 12, 1832. The location of his burial site is not known since he died 3 years before the first cemetery was opened. Josiah married Elizabeth (possibly Smith) and they had one child Moses Gilbert born March 10, 1784 in New Brunswick. Elizabeth died in 1786 and early in 1796, Josiah left Moses in New Brunswick with a neighbour and traveled to Upper Canada. On June 8, 1796 in Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) Josiah, applied for a land grant of 200 acres in the Long Point Settlement. In a Land Council document dated July 4, 1797, Josiah and his new wife Sarah Outhouse (her name appears on this document) received 200 acres of waste land on Lot # 12 Concession # 4 of Townsend Township, Norfolk County, Upper Canada.
