Owers in NE England
James Owers 9/06/05
Apparently first found in Cheshire but Owers is predominately found in Essex. Owers arrived in County Durham around the latter 1850's mainly in the Pelton area which is in the Chester-le-Street Registration District. Some however were in the South Shields area.
Emmell Owers (Emma?) is found on the 1861 census of West Pelton and is probably the daughter of George and Thirza Owers. George and Thirza were born in Suffolk. Emma is found on the 1881 Census as a servant working in Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Emmamarried Tom Burridge 1883 and the Burridges are still in the Pelton area. My grandfather was related through marriage to the Burridges and knew them well.
James Owers and his wife Susan(nah) Hayward were also in Pelton on the 1861 census Pelton as was a Mary Owers. I believe that George, James and Mary were brothers and sister and were all from Barton Mills.
