I have attempted in the past to connect this very distinguished gentleman to my Longenecker ancestors and have had no luck to date. I have a November 1945 Pittsburgh Press article connecting him with the University of Pittsburgh as dean of research in the natural sciences. I do know he was named a Penn State Alumni Fellow in 1997 and served as president of Tulane University from 1960 to 1975. That is just a few credits to an outstanding career. I cannot, however, figure why my grandmother kept this newspaper article. My Longenecker ancestors go back to Jacob and Mary Strickler Longanecker of Fayette & Westmoreland Counties, and since my grandmother (Anna Elizabeth Longenecker Wisser) was so meticulous in saving everything, there has to be a family connection. I tried writing to Dr. Longenecker several years ago but to no avail.
I believe Dr. Longenecker has a son, also named Herbert, who seems to be as brilliant and distinguished as his father.
Can anyone tell me anything about Dr. Longenecker's parents, etc
