James Baines died Nov 16, 1883 - Murdered?

There is a family story we have not been able to corroborate. The story is that James Baines died of a gunshot wound. We have searched some for old newspapers, nothing has come up. I believe he owned a coal mine or operation, was relatively well-to-do, but upon his death, the family fortunes fell somewhat, however the widow and 8 children did manage. A story has been passed down about the children being teased because of their misfortune.
