Mary: A lot of the Irish immigrants who came to the Pittsburgh area from 1862 - 1900 settled in areas near the steel mills where work was plentiful. My own ancestors located near the Jones & Laughlin Steel Mill, which was on the South Side (in the 1800's it was called Birmingham). The Roman Catholic churches on the South Side were many and were ethnic specific (e.g., the Irish went to Holy Cross Church, the Polish went to St. Matthews, etc.) Holy Cross Church's property was bought up by the Steel Mill. The Irish then went to St. Peter's Church (4 blocks away). All records for all of the Roman Catholic parishes in Pittsburgh are housed in the Diocese of Pittsburgh offices at 111 Blvd. of the Allies, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 412.456.3000. Their website is http://www.diopitt.org/ Hope this helps. Rose Notify Administrator about this message?
