Kathye,

This may be of no interest to you but... Maxim ship arrival info is

First Name: Maksim Surko
Last Name: PENIC

Last Place of Residence: Krasic
Date of Arrival: Sep 10, 1902
Age at Arrival: 18y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Grosser Kurfurst

Manifest Line Number: 0021

He took his Oath for Citizenship Nov 21, 1917

WW I Draft Registration filed Sept 1918
Name: Maksin Penic Sirak
County: Allegheny
State: Pennsylvania
Birth Date: 25 Feb 1883

1920 census Ancestry mistransrcribed the name as Max Sorak Allegheny Co. Forest Hills

His name was actually Maxim PENIĆ-SIRAK

PENIĆ was most likely the original family name, which is somewnat frequent around Krasic with a "nickname" or "clan name" of SIRAK added so as to differentiate this branch.

The IC ending sounds like ICH and means "son of" as far as sirak this is the Croatian word for sorghum, but my guess is that it may have come from sir (sounds like sear) which is the Croatian word for cheese... AK endings are a diminutive.

Krasic is about 30 miles to the SW of the capital of Croatia, Zagreb. This town is the birthplace of the martyred Archbishop, Aloysia STEPINAC, who was jailed by the communists on false charges.
