Many, many thanks for the elaborate geneology of the Barefoot family. We knew next to nothing about Blaine's first two wives, in fact we only thought he had one additional wife. This also shows the connection to the Vickroy family. This is a good search for Thora and will enable me to locate her father in various military records. I was sure Thora told me he was a surgeon during his military service, but perhaps this was not the case and he became a doctor after the war. The classic story was that he was on the porch of the house in Winchester where General Sheridan had just retired after a long train ride back to the front from a meeting in Washington. He was awakened by the cannon fire as Jubal Early began his surprise attack at Cedar Creek. He asked how long this had been going on and was told several hours. Just then Brookings piped up and said (which took tremendous courage knowing the general's volatile temper): "Yes, general, and I think you should be there too!" Sheridan replied: "You do, huh?" and the rest is legend as Sheridan rode his horse Reienze about twelve miles (not the twenty miles of the poem) to rally the retreating troops and save the day.

Just for the record, a classmate of mine at Windber elementary and high school was Gail McCune. Perhaps she is a member of your extneded family. She was a somewhat shy and delicate blonde girl who lived near me for a time.
