About one year ago, I ventured to Blair County looking for information on my grandfather,Harry F. Bailey. In two days, I struck gold! Here is a summary of the experiences: - A must visit is the Blair County Genealogical Society, Scotch Valley Rd. just past Dave's Dream restaurant off Rt.22. Bob Hewitt, librarian, was on duty and a big help. - I found a map of Hollidaysburg,Pa., dated 1873. The houses were marked with the family name! I found my great- grandfather's house on Hickory Street. - I visited the Hoenstein library on Montgomery Street. Donna Hoenstein shared with me that the iron ore mines were located just beyond Shanty Town,at the bottom of Montgomery St. Census records indicated that my great-grandfather was an iron ore miner. The iron ore was moved on buggies through an underground track to the canal. - I visited the old St.Mary's cemetery. The caretaker,Jack Hallberg, was helpful and unlocked the gate for me. Found the headstones for Francis Joseph Bailey, died December 23, 1926 and Margaret Schnellbach Bailey, died July 2, 1928.I took pictures of the headstones for my dad to see. - Next I used the microfilm copies of the Altoona Mirror newspaper to copy the obituaries of my great-grandparents! - What an excellent obituary listing place of death, occupation, parents, and community involvement. My Dad and his Dad both love to sing. Francis was in a social choir, quite renowned, in Blair County. It is in the genes! - At the Genealogical Society I copied 30 years of tax records, from 1878 to 1908,the year the family house was sold. I went to the house and talked to the current owners - A visit to the St.Michael's Catholic Church gave me information on baptism, confirmation, and marriage records for Harry F. Bailey and his other brothers and sisters. at 312 Hickory Street,at the corner of McGraw's Alley. I can't wait to go back!
