SPOHN family

I'm looking for informations about a SPOHN family who lived in Bucks Co. in the Doylestown area from about 1842 to 1850 before migrating to northern Indiana. The family originally immigrated from Germany.

I'm looking for information about a Peter SPOHN (b. about 1818) who married a Catharine/Katharine STILGENBAUER in Germany sometime between 1830 & 1839. They were both likely born & raised Evangelical/Lutheran.

Peter & Catharine/Katharine (Stilgenbauer) SPOHN had a son Jacob C. SPOHN who was born in "Hupstaten" (probably Hoppstädten or Hoppstaedten), Hessen-Hamburg, Germany in 5 December 1839.

In the U.S. the family was from the Evangelical Luthern Church or "German Reformed Evangelical."

The young family immigrated to the U.S. circa 1842 or 1843. Some of the SPOHN children: Catharine, Mary, Levi, & Helen/Helena were born in Pennsylvania (probably Bucks Co., Pennsylvania or Berks Co., Pennsylvana) & later children: Lydia, Margaret & Caroline were born in Indiana. However, there is some evidence to suggest that there may have been Stilgenbauer relatives in "Bucks Township, Tuscarawas, Ohio"

Peter SPOHN died in St. Joseph Co., Indiana, USA 13 AUG 1855 of sunstroke during harvest. I am not sure if Peter was his first name or if he went by a middle name. For example, Peter might actually have been Jacob Peter or Johann Peter Spohn. However, I have no evidence either way.

After Peter SPOHN died, Catharine/Katharina married Peter FRIES. Catharine/Katharina & Peter FRIES had a son Abraham FRIES.

Here are the children of Catharine/Katharina & PETER SPOHN:
Dr. Jacob C. Spohn (b. 5 Dec. 1839 Germany; d. Apr 1906 St. Louis)
Catharine Spohn ZIMMER (ca. 1843 Pennsylvania d. 1905 Indiana)
Mary SPOHN ZIMMER MATTERN (b. ca. 1846 Pennsylvania d. 1918 Indiana)
Levi SPOHN (b. ca, 1847 Pennsylvania d. 1863)
Helen/Helena SPOHN HASLANGER (b. ca. 1849 Pennsylvania d.?)
Lydia SPOHN DEAGLE GRISE (b. 9 May 1851 Indiana d. 21 Dec 1924 Indiana)
Margaret SPOHN SCHWALM (5 November, 1853 Indiana d. 9 Dec., 1940 Indiana)
Caroline SPOHN LANG (b. 5 Sept. 1855 Indiana d. 29 Sept. 1920 Indiana or Michigan)

According to her obituary in Bremen, Indiana, Catharine Stilgenbauer SPOHN FRIES was born 25 Jan. of 1821 or 1822 in "Hobsteden" of "Hessen Hamburg." The correct spelling was probably Hoppstädten or Hoppstaedten Hesse-Homburg (Hessen-Homburg) in western Germany.

Catharine/Katharine may have gone by the name "Otilla" or "Otille" as that name was associated with her in some familial recollections. However, I have only one source that uses the name "Otilla."

We have seen multiple spelling's for Catharine/Katharine SPOHN's maiden name: Stillenbacker, Stillenbarger, Stilgenbous, Spillenbauer, Stilchendour, Stiltchendourer to name a few, but so far, STILGENBAUER/STILLGENBAUER looks the most pausible, especially since it seems many of the "Stilgenbauers" in the U.S. during the 1880 census time frame were from "Hesse."

Further reference to the SPOHN family in Pennsylvania can be found in the ROCHESTER UNION SPY, Friday, July 21, 1876 [Rochester, Fulton Co., IN]
[letter to editor signed J. C. SPOHN relating a visit "to Doylestown, Pa., the home of the first ten years of my existence ... ]

Any help you would have about the Spohn/Stilgenbauer connection to Bucks Co./ Doylestown , PA area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sarah
