I, too, have spent four years creating a genealogy web site. It contains over 6000 pages of genealogical data and family group sheets -- the results of thousands of hours of unpaid research, every bit of which I feely share -- with relatively few links to other sites and NO advertising. Both the research and the web site are paid for entirely by me; I'm not trying to make any money off of them.
The bottom line is, if I wanted to help make someone's research easier, I'd send them to Cyndi's List and USGenWeb, not to your site, because there is nothing at your site that isn't, in my opinion, better provided for there.
I have not impuned your motives or disparaged your character or your abilities, so I have not slandered you. I have simply given my opinion of your site, which, as you say, is my right. Anyone who publishes, in print or on the web, runs the risk that someone will criticize their work -- especially if they go around touting it.
