Lehigh Gap was formed by the Lehigh River flowing through the two sections of the Blue Mountain or Kittatinney Ridge, as it was sometimes called. The ridge of the Blue Mountain today divides Carbon County on the north and Lehigh County on the south.
Carbon County was formed in 1843 out of Northampton County. Since Carbon did not exist before that date we would have to technically say that the Gap was not a part of the county inthe mid mid 1700's.
