You might find the 1880 census from Franklin Twp. quite illuminating. It shows Jane Hardman age 45 (incorrectly listed as June in the index), son James age 21, daughter Lettitia age 18, SON JABEZ BOYER age 9 and mother Mary Campbell age 80. Interestingly the next family listed is that of Daniel Boyer.

I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
