Yes, I think the problem you're having is partially due to what appears to be the Germanic name......and, the census taker/court recorder, etc, put down how HE thought the name was spelled, so we have little insight into how our ancestor REALLY spelled his name! We can't know that unless we see their signatures, which are as scarce as hens' teeth to find~thus the many different spellings found in records. It didn't help that many of these folks only spoke German, making it hard for the census taker to know correct spellings.
I checked the area wills, including York Co, for Ebaugh, Epaugh, Ebach, Epach, with none found.. I also looked in a book of 18th cent. York Co church records...with no luck. I have a book on land records of Hopewell Twp, York Co, and found 3 men that might be possibles...especially one...they are Adam Ebaugh, David K. Ebaugh and John Ebaugh. John Ebaugh (only in the records it's spelled Ibaugh....he was a member, in 1795, of St. John's (Sadler's)Church....it was an early Lutheran/Reformed parish...the earliest records were from around 1789. Saddler's Lutheran Church was located in Stewartstown, Hopewell Twp.
John Ebaugh land...Survey +1230, +1231...bought in Dec of 1793.
(I went back to the wills CD and looked for Ibaugh/Ibach but none offor those spellings, either)
