Rather than trying to 'tie' your ancestors to a particular person, you're far better off to research with an open mind, for you have no idea where primary documents may take you. so, simply start with a known, proven generation...perhaps your grandparents? and just go from there, with census, marriage records, death certificates, newspaper obits, all sorts of primary sources...do not progress back a generation till you have 'proved' the one before it. Without proof there is no way of knowing who, in further back generations, will be related to you so don't waste time researching someone you can't prove is an ancestor. This methodical approach is really the only way to be sure who your ancestors actually were.
