Since he was naturalized you should request his naturalization petition which will have his place of birth and a correct spelling of his surname.
Check in http://ssdi.rootsweb.com If he is there than send for his SS-5Form which will have some information. Have you located his manifest? Take a look in Ellis Island website. www.ellisislandrecords.org
