Dear Mrs. Voegelin,
Very strange discoveries recently. Apparantly, we have DeWalta Halberger marrying an Elizabeth (no last name). We have DeWalt Junior having two sons Jacob (who marries another Wyandot, Elizabeth) and Abraham marrying Hill, another Wyandot lady.
We know that Mathias marries a white lady.
Here's the clincher: DeWalta does not seem to be Moravian initially. But he may have married a native convert to the sect, hence the first name, no last name...Moravians gave Bible names to Native converts without surnames. It sure looks like Jacob goes whole hog for the Moravian thing. His wife has no surname either. But with Abraham there is the name Hill, which breaks the pattern. It is not a Bible name.
We find the descendants up in the Moravian Missionary areas when the Moravians were all over there. But in the Moravian Diary of one of their famous Missionaries, it is noted that everyone except the missionaries is written of as Brother Jacob, Brother Abraham, Sister Elizabeth, etc. NO surnames for Natives and half Natives!
This all makes me feel like the result of some strange religious experiment!
Mathias' line seems less affected by all this, and it seems that they did not go way into the Moravian religion.
All that I can say is that when you begin this type of research, you have to accept history. I have no problem with Native Ancestry. But the Moravians seem so fanatical...How deep the connection was will be hard to document as surnames were added later for ID purposes at the onset of the 1800s or so with those who were Native descent.
